“In our effort to get rid of this corrupt and dangerous government and have a progressive one, no one is superfluous,” stressed the president of Syriza-Progressive Alliance, Socrates FAMELLOS, in his speech at the Political Secretariat meeting.
S. FAMELLOS spoke of a “strategic mistake” in the case of “confrontation with the Greek Left Coalition”, describing its establishment as a “major political event” and a “positive development”. “We stand by this initiative, support it, do not see it competitively, but as a companion,” he characteristically said, emphasizing that Syriza is working towards the direction of participation in a “broad unifying convergence and expression of progressive and democratic forces, collectives, personalities, which is necessary for a victorious electoral clash with the Mitsotakis regime.”
“Our goal and commitment is the historical political continuity of the ideas and legacy of Syriza-Progressive Alliance, the Radical Left, the Renewal Left, the Progressive Alliance, in a broader restructuring and coalition of the progressive space, utilizing and the historical experience of the metamorphoses of the left-progressive space,” he added and concluded:
“The strong action of the KO and the overall Syriza-Progressive Alliance is necessary, honoring and serving the popular mandate of the citizens. To have a strong opposition to the Mitsotakis regime, and also to highlight the priorities of a progressive program.”
According to the AMNA-MPA, commenting on the overall political situation in the country, he stressed that “the political and governmental crisis peaks” and described an environment of “social injustice” and daily scandals. “While the vice president of ND declares shamelessly that half of the debt should be written off from the loans and irrevocably of his party, the government allows funds to take people’s homes, even the first homes, for debts of a few thousand euros,” he said, among other things, referring to “a real regime operating under Mafia terms and underground propaganda mechanisms.”
Regarding the Constitutional Revision, he accused the government of “hypocrisy”, since “it continuously tramples on the Constitution and violates the independence of institutions and the rights of citizens.” “And it dares to talk about revising Article 86, which has been used many times to ban research on the responsibilities of ministers,” he noted, referring to the priorities set by Syriza, such as “the independence of justice, the disengagement of the process of control and prosecution of ministers from the government majority, the protection of constitutionally guaranteed Independent Authorities, the issue of collective labor agreements, the protection of public space, the environment and networks of energy and transport” etc.
The president of Syriza-Progressive Alliance did not fail to refer to international developments, at the beginning of his speech, emphasizing that “the political Trump-Netanyahu re-introduces military power as a primary tool for the exercise of foreign policy, undermining the role of the UN” and accusing the Mitsotakis government that “it chooses guilty silence and operates as a willing ally of Trump and Netanyahu.”
For Greek-Turkish relations, he stressed that “the government continues to invest in the communication image of ‘calm waters’, without addressing Turkish revisionism, which is proven by the establishment of ‘Blue Homeland'” and reiterated the long-standing position of Syriza-Progressive Alliance that “supports dialogue on the basis of international law, with clear red lines, as well as recourse to the International Court of The Hague for the delimitation of the continental shelf and EEZ”, in favor of a “multifaceted active foreign policy that will serve peace, international legitimacy, democracy and human rights.”
“The far-right turn of Europe and the government is also reflected in immigration policy. We will not tolerate other tragedies in Greek and European waters. We will not tolerate our country becoming a warehouse of souls. We will not tolerate the transfer to Europe and Greece of the practices of the ICE of Donald Trump,” he said, among other things.
